| Abstract | This document presents information on the components and configurations used to implement Internet Firewalls. This information was gathered during a survey of literature and on-line sources related to Firewalls. Where possible, sources of the provided information and sources of further information are provided as footnotes. The document begins by explaining the inherent security problems of the TCP/IP protocol suite as a motivation for the need for Firewalls. This information is also needed to fully appreciate the services offered by various Firewall components. The security-related vulnerabilities of particular, commonly-used IP applications are then explored. The components used to construct Firewalls are then presented. These are Packet-filters and Application Gateways. Another important aspect of Firewalls, the network policy they are enforcing, is also discussed. The use of components to construct 4 commonly-found Firewall configurations is then explained. These configurations are: |
