| Abstract | The emerging success of object-oriented programming techniques and Distributed Object Computing (DOC) is being closely followed by demands for object-oriented support for distributed multimedia applications. Unfortunately the requirements of continuous media are greater than those demanded by conventional client/server applications, and thus current Distributed Object Environments (DOEs), including the OMG's Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) and Microsoft's Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM), do not meet these demands. In this paper we examine and discuss the requirements for continuous media applications and how existing commercial DOEs, focused primarily at supporting application suited to request/reply interactions, are far from fulfilling them. We then survey a selection of prominent `multimedia middleware' platforms which provide both abstractions and mechanisms for continuous media support. 1. Introduction We use the term Distributed Object Environment (D... |
