Small business leadership, a comparison of founders vs.

Abstract	Leadership capability is widely considered a critical variable in the success of a growing business. The purpose of this paper is to empirically test whether there are managerial differences between founder and non-founder CEOs of small and medium sized enterprises. We report preliminary findings of a study of 173 chief executives and their firms, examining measures of proactive behavior, strategic posture, and organization structure. Our findings show that founder CEOs are significantly more likely than nonfounder chief executives to have a proactive disposition and point to the possibility of an indirect effect of that disposition on managerial style. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Leadership capability is widely considered a critical variable in the success of a growing business. Top management style dictates the strategic posture or competitive orientation of firms, and can be seen in the firm’s operating management philosophy and strategic decision-making. If entrepreneurs have distinguishing traits, as prior research studies have found, we might therefore expect to see differences in management style and behavior based upon the founder status of company chief executives.
