| Abstract | This paper presents an application of Ontologies in the field of Design for Manufacturing (DFM). The current trend towards frameworks in the design area poses challenges in regard to the format used in the representation of knowledge and data in such frameworks. Currently the main approaches being used are a defined specific format file or runtime information which are limited in the implementation of design frameworks although are the approach being used by all frameworks in the field. The ontology approach to information content overcomes these limitations. An ontology based information content and existence in a DFM Framework is introduced. Its usage and implementation is important, relevant, and complete so it should be increased in the future when relatively simple information format becomes obsolete. The main aspects of DFM ontologies are described along with the implementation of ontologies in a DFM framework. Keywords: Ontologies, Design for Manufacturing. |
