| Abstract | www.sociology.ox.ac.uk/swp.html Prejudice as a response to changes in competitive threat: Finnish attitudes towards immigrants 1986-2006 This paper explores competitive threat as an explanation for attitudes towards immigrants. In particular, the paper argues that recent changes in competitive circumstances are more likely to affect prejudice than are their levels. Competitive circumstances are measured by the size of the foreign population, unemployment, and media reports on immigration. These are used to explain levels of prejudice towards immigrants in Finland in the period 1986-2006. This was a time when the foreign population grew rapidly as well as seeing a major recession and rocketing unemployment rates in the early 1990s. The major finding of this paper is that both changes in the rate of growth of the foreign population and change in the unemployment level have an effect on levels of prejudice whereas the size of the foreign population and the level of unemployment do not. There is also evidence to show that media reports on increasing immigration have an adverse effect on attitudes towards immigrants. The data used at the individual level is a pooled data set (N=23,278) of eleven EVA Surveys on Finnish Values and Attitudes. |
