| Abstract | Spatio-temporal databases store and support queries based on location and time data associated with objects or entries. Because relational databases and SQL are widely used, it is popular to implement a spatio-temporal database in a relational/SQL framework. Here, two extensions to a relational database are presented: a 2D spatiotemporal implementation using PL/SQL in Oracle Database called STOAF (Spatio-Temporal Oracle Aggregate Functions) and a 3D spatial-only implementation. We found that STOAF completes spatio-temporal queries more quickly than Oracle Spatial. In addition, STOAF does not require indexing, but the equivalent Oracle Spatial queries used indexing. 1 |
