| Abstract | Dynamic adaptability of operating system kernels is a hot topic of research projects al over the world. This paper presents the basics and some implemtation aspects of an object-oriented system architecture, the so-called class-object architecture, which was designed to support fine-grained dynamic adaptability in the CHEOPS operating system project. One central idea of the presented concept is to close the gap between the software development technology on the one hand and the object management in the running system on the other hand, by providing a mechanism to load, remove and exchange classes during runtime. In this way, the dynamic adaptation of the kernel is done by performing the same steps of adaptation within the running system as have been done before at the level of design and implementation. Keywords: dynamic adaptability, class objects, operating systems, objectoriented architecture 1 Introduction The requirements to be met by todays operating systems rapidly... |
