| Abstract | The High Level Architecture (HLA) is a reusable software architecture for the development and execution of distributed simulation applications. It is fostered by the Defense Modelling and Simulation Office (DMSO) of the US Department of Defense (DoD) since 1996. The HLA has become a new standard for distributed simulation in the Object Management Group (OMG) in November 1998 and the Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers (IEEE) as IEEE-1516 in September 2000. In this paper, we review the basic concepts of distributed interactive simulation and its evolving history from SIMNET to HLA. Then we illustrate how the HLA supports the requirements of the collaborative virtual environment (CVE) via its service groups, using our virtual shopping mall application as an example. |
