| Description | This work presents an approach and associated techniques applied to consistency checking of distributed heterogeneous documents, a vital part of the domain of consistency management. The thesis is founded on the work on consistency management presented in (Ellmer, et. al., 1999), and contributes to this work by extending an existing tool by allowing consistency checking of documents represented in XML Metadata Interchange format (XMI). Just as important, the consistency checker implemented in this work allows for detection of a larger set of inconsistency types. Our approach uses XML (eXtensible Markup Language) and related technologies allowing for Internet-scale distribution. The presented approach to consistency checking depends on specification of consistency rules, that is, relationships or facts that are required to hold among concepts in the participating documents. The consistency rules are specified using XPointer syntax and related elements are associated by consistency links using XLink. The intention with the created consistency links is to use them to browse through overlapping software engineering documents to facilitate identification and handling of inconsistencies. The thesis describes related work done in the realm of consistency management and presents the theoretical foundations for the work presented. This includes the technologies applied and a thorough presentation of the approach the implementation builds upon. The design and implementation of the consistency checking component is described, and a number of consistency rules is specified to validate the implementation. Three case studies are given in order to test the new component for both functionality and scalability in addition to the specified consistency rules. i |
