| Abstract | to meet the needs of deregulated utilities. The main characteristics of these systems are open architecture, standards based, and use of data models. These characteristics match up to the needs of a distribution SCADA that has been down-sized in support staff, limited in capital budget, and driven by management to provide new, competitive services to customers. The next generation of SCADA systems will simplify maintenance and interfacing by using object technology. Applications will be built with object tool kits and make use of more commercial PC applications. They will be implemented more quickly and will require smaller capital investment. This paper will discuss these developments and serve as an introduction to a related panel which will present a cross section of these new DISCo SCADA’s. |
