| Abstract | In normal muscle cells of various mammals there is no demonstrable sarcoplasmic alkaline phospha-tase activity. Engel and Cunningham (1) reported that, in human muscle biopsies from patients with various myopathies, fibers that reveal alkaline phosphatase activity occur and speculated that the presence of the enzyme may indicate early de-generative or regenerative changes. They also stated that in experimentally injured animal mus-cle (mouse and rabbit) alkaline phosphatase-con-taming fibers are not found, and they assumed that the demonstration of alkaline phosphatase ac-tivity provides a means of identification of ab-normal human muscle fibers. In several histochemical studies of muscle un- |
