| Description | The var. of Colocasia esculenta var. antiquorum, taro, cocoyam, sweet potato, and yam cultivated in St. Vincent are described in detail, and the availability of land and potential expansion, farm characteristics, cropping systems, internal and external demand, and market systems are indicated. A comprehensive study on production costs of these crops is also presented. Cassava is grown in the regions of Dorsetshire Hill and Argyle, but its production is insignificant. It is sown in mixed cropping systems (sweet potato/maize/cassava, sweet potato/cowpea/cassava, sweet potato/cowpea/maize/cassava). Cassava is the only root crop processed; farine is the main by-product, produced in home-based industries. Arrowroot starch production has slowly replaced cassava starch production. Finally, production constraints and the future direction of research are discussed. (CIAT) Se describen en detalle las var. de Colocasia esculenta var. antiquorum, malangay, name, ocumo y batata que se cultivan en San Vicente, y se indican la disponibilidad de tierras y el potencial de expansion, las caracteristicas de las fincas productoras, los sistemas de cultivo, la demanda interna y externa y los sistemas de mercado. Tambien se presenta un estudio extenso de los costos de produccion de estos cultivos. La yuca se cultiva en las regiones de Dorsetshire Hill y Argyle, pero su produccion es insignificante. Se siembra en cultivo mixto (batata/maiz/yuca, batata/caupi/yuca, batata/caupi/maiz/yuca). Es el unico cultivo de raiz que se procesa; la farina es el subproducto principal, producido a nivel casero. La produccion de almidon de arruruz ha ido reemplazando la de almidon de yuca. Finalmente, se discuten las limitaciones de produccion y la orientacion de la investigacion futura. (CIAT) |
