| Abstract | The management of agricultural land to improve farm income in coastal saline areas is quite challengingbecause, firstly, most of the agricultural area is characterised by monocropping with low-yielding ricevarieties during kharif season. Under such fragile environment sustaining the livelihoods of these resourcepoor farmers become a real challenge both for technology developers as well as policy makers. Toincrease the farm income under the coastal saline environment, strategies have been taken up to increasethe adoption of the salt resistant crop varieties and more importantly harvesting, storing and appropriatemanagement through different kinds of land shaping technologies. The study pertains to primary surveyon farm households, in South and North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. The sample farmers weredrawn from two blocks, six villages and total sample size of 180 farm households of which half were thebeneficiary farmers and the rest was non-beneficiary farmers. In the coastal area the land shapingtechnique, particularly farm pond and paddy-cum fish models, are unique technology for addressing thekey challenges like land degradation (salinity), drainage congestion and scarcity of fresh water forirrigation and in turn have the potential to enhancing production, productivity, income and employment. These techniques particularly farm pond and paddy-cum-fish are a financially viable and attractiveproposition for the coastal region. However for larger adoption of these technologies need to address somekey issues like socio-economic constraints, some of which can be addressed by research level (e.g. landconfiguration, soil quality) some other at policy level (e.g. financial incentives). |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
