| Abstract | This paper describes the experiences of both the authors and the special group of disadvantaged people who entered a computer operator training course in New York City in the fall of 1968. The course was sponsored by a group of computer professionals on a volunteer basis, from various institutions and companies, in collaboration with local community groups. The project attempted a unique approach to selection of potential candidates as students: it allowed them to pass through a structured entrance experience during or after which they made their own decision to select themselves in or select themselves out of the next phase, namely, training. No selection tests were used or given. This resulted in a group of students who had a higher level of interest in computer operating entry level jobs, with a consequently higher level of motivation. It thus allowed men of the most minimal level of comprehension capabilities, ninth grade approximately, to enter into a presumably complex occupational training course and complete it effectively. That they then went forth and actually obtained jobs in their new vocation, despite their educational deficiencies, rounded out our project's experience. Details of the structured experience are given, as well as a description of the group, the training course and the role of counselors in remediation and in the decision-making processes, along with statistical results. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
