| Abstract | Patent searching is an information retrieval specialty that operates under precise and stringent conditions, with different strategies and endpoints needed for different purposes. Specialized products for patent information have emphasized analytics and results presentation, while methods of selecting dependable results have not kept pace with burgeoning volume, complexity and media technology. Exceptional vocabulary, curious grammatical constructions, and regulatory and legal requirements inherent in patent information content have implications for keyword-based data retrieval and natural language algorithms. The need for caution in restricting large results sets may benefit from collateral rather than strict hierarchical query structure. |
