| Abstract | The spatial and temporal databases have been studied widely and intensively over years. In this paper, we study how to answer queries of finding the best departure time that minimizes the total travel time from a place to another, over a road network, where the traffic conditions dynamically change from time to time. We study a generalized form of this problem, called the time-dependent shortest-path problem. A time-dependent graph $G_{T}$ is a graph that has an edge-delay function, wi, j(t), associated with each edge $(v_{i},$ $v_{j}),$ to be stored in a database. The edge-delay function wi, j(t) specifies how much time it takes to travel from node $v_{i}$ to node $v_{j},$ if it departs from $v_{i}$ at time t. A user-specified query is to ask the minimum-travel-time path, from a source node, $v_{s},$ to a destination node, $v_{e},$ over the time-dependent graph, $G_{T},$ with the best departure time to be selected from a time interval T. We denote this user query as $LTT(v_{s},$ $v_{e},$ T) over $G_{T}.$ The challenge of this problem is the added complexity due to the time dependency in the time-dependent graph. That is, edge delays are not constants, and can vary from time to time. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm to find the minimum-travel-time path with the best departure time for a $LTT(v_{s},$ $v_{e},$ T) query over a large graph $G_{T}.$ Our approach outperforms existing algorithms in terms of both time complexity in theory and efficiency in practice. We will discuss the design of our algorithm, together with its correctness and complexity. We conducted extensive experimental studies over large graphs and will report our findings. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
