| Abstract | In recent years, research and development activities in the database management area have increased dramatically as the numbers of database users, databases, and database management systems have grown. These activities were further stimulated by the urgent need to apply database theories and technologies in many other disciplines, such as CAD/CAM, library automation, computer graphics, statistical/scientific data analysis, office automation, pattern recognition, and artificial intelligence. The International Conference on Management of Data, sponsored by ACM's Special Interest Group on Management of Data (SIGMOD), provides an important forum to the international community to disseminate and exchange new ideas in database technology, to promote activities in the database area, and to increase the understanding of the design, implementation, and use of database systems. This year's conference has a number of innovative approaches. First, in addition to the traditional areas of study, the technical program focuses on some new topics such as Engineering and Scientific applications, integration of different databases, and statistical database management. Second, a concious effort has been made to solicit good papers outside the United States to make the tone of this conference truly international. Third, we actively sought and encouraged paper submissions from practitioners. This was done to share real-world database management problems and experiences with the research community. Fourth, but not least, this conference offers (for the first time in SIGMOD's history, we might add) an exhibition of commercial DBMSs so that the attendees have the opportunity to experience first-hand the operation, design, and features of popular systems. The conference proceedings contains 33 high-quality technical papers, in addition to abstracts of the panel sessions. The technical papers were selected from over 123 submissions, a record number for SIGMOD conferences. Papers came from 17 different countries from the European, Asian, African, and American continents, and reflect the genuine interest and enthusiasm of SIGMOD's role in database research around the world. Each paper was refereed by at least 3 members of the Program Committee. The papers were evaluated based on their quality, originality and significance of their contribution. The members of the Program Committee are to be congratulated for the excellent job they did in evaluating and selecting the papers. We extend our heart-felt appreciation to their great effort. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.

NDLI is a conglomeration of freely available or institutionally contributed or donated or publisher managed contents. Almost all these contents are hosted and accessed from respective sources. The responsibility for authenticity, relevance, completeness, accuracy, reliability and suitability of these contents rests with the respective organization and NDLI has no responsibility or liability for these. Every effort is made to keep the NDLI portal up and running smoothly unless there are some unavoidable technical issues.
Ministry of Education, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT), has sponsored and funded the National Digital Library of India (NDLI) project.
