| Abstract | Determining what test or battery of tests will predict most accurately the successful completion of a course for computer programmers at a community college or other post-secondary schools is examined in this study. The rapid growth of post high school educational institutions offering programmer training together with the increased use of programmer aptitude tests requires that more be known about the widely used measurement instruments in a post-secondary setting. The best single predictor of academic performance in a programmer training course was the diagramming test of the Computer Programmer Aptitude Battery, correlating .49 with course grade. The best combination of predictors, using step-wise regression procedures, was the diagramming test, the programmer key and age-related interest scale of the Strong Vocational Interest Blank, and Russell's test of motivation for school achievement, correlating .67 with course grade. As predicted, the programmer key of the Strong Vocational Interest Blank showed that students enrolled in programmer training obtained significantly higher (p<.001) scores than students at the same educational level but not enrolled in programmer training. Trainees with interests similar to successful programmers on-the-job (scores over 50 on the key) obtained significantly higher grades (p<.05) than other students with few interests similar to successful programmers (scores below 40). The programmer key is an appropriate instrument for selecting post-secondary candidates. The optimal prediction equation, containing scores from the diagramming test of the Computer Programmer Aptitude Battery, programmer key and age-related interest scale of the Strong Vocational Interest Blank, and Russell's motivation test, is deemed sufficiently effective for use in predicting academic performance in a programmer training course. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
