Abstract	Definition: By "Remote Terminal Emulator" (RTE) we mean a programmable hardware/software device that can appear to he any collection of terminals to a computer system. It would be attached to the system just as a terminal(s) would. To the system, it would be the same as real terminals. We used a RTE device to drive a major computer system. As a result of this experience and other investigations into the field, we will present the following topics: 1. Characteristics of a RTE and the one we used in particular 2. Potential impact (i.e., uses) -testing effects of operating system changes -predicting future bottlenecks -saturating the system to test for bugs 3. Benefits over other methods -repeatable -limited knowledge needed about system under test -fewer assumptions for management to question -same study useable by many Designing a study -who to talk to and what to say -what to emulate -what to measure -how to get data on terminal characteristics and activity -who should interpret -what next 5. Availability of the tool -commericially -version used other Alternative methods to get same information -simulation -try and see Terminals are becoming more and more of a load on systems. A RTE capability can be a timely help to aid management. Currently little can be predicted as to the impact of more terminals. Simulation can be a lengthly process. The RTE seems a good alternative.
