| Abstract | Image retrieval technology has been developed for more than twenty years. However, the current image retrieval techniques cannot achieve a satisfactory recall and precision. To improve the effectiveness and efficiency of an image retrieval system, a novel content-based image retrieval method with a combination of image segmentation and eye tracking data is proposed in this paper. In the method, eye tracking data is collected by a non-intrusive table mounted eye tracker at a sampling rate of 120 Hz, and the corresponding fixation data is used to locate the human's Regions of Interest (hROIs) on the segmentation result from the JSEG algorithm. The hROIs are treated as important informative segments/objects and used in the image matching. In addition, the relative gaze duration of each hROI is used to weigh the similarity measure for image retrieval. The similarity measure proposed in this paper is based on a retrieval strategy emphasizing the most important regions. Experiments on 7346 Hemera color images annotated manually show that the retrieval results from our proposed approach compare favorably with conventional content-based image retrieval methods, especially when the important regions are difficult to be located based on visual features. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
