| Abstract | It is our great pleasure to introduce the first edition of the ACM International Workshop on Multimedia Alternate Realities: AltMM 2016. The goal of AltMM is to explore how the synergy between multimedia technologies and effects can foster the creation of alternate realities and make their access an enriching, valuable and real experience. Advances in multimedia technology are transforming the way we experience multimedia content. New devices, transmission paradigms, and content formats are making it possible to create immersive experiences that may involve the user in a different or augmented world, as an alternate reality. With increased capabilities to represent, process, interact and communicate with or through media with higher quality in the audiovisual domain, and possibly involving all other human senses as well, emergent multimedia technology holds the potential to take the experience of alternate realities to a new level. AltMM aims at fostering the creation of multimedia technology that allows users to access other worlds, to live other people's stories, to communicate with or experience alternate realities. Different spaces, times or situations can be entered thanks to multimedia contents and systems, which coexist with our current reality, and are sometimes so vivid and engaging that we feel we are living in them. By exploring the meaning of alternate realness, and the technologies enabling its design, creation, consumption and evaluation, AltMM is the first international venue to support the ideation of alternate realities based on immersive, interactive multimedia systems of the future. AltMM attracted 16 submissions from Asia, Europe and the United States. Of these, five long papers and two short papers will be presented in interactive presentation sessions. All papers received at least three double blind reviews, with 3.8 reviews on average. The workshop offers a program combining oral presentations, a poster and demo session for interactive presentations, and na fishbowl discussion. We are especially proud to present the keynote talk by Professor Wijnand IJsselsteijn, from Eindhoven University of Technology, discussing the sense of presence in multimedia alternate realities. |
