NDLI: Receiver for inductively coupled communication with an implantable sensor

Abstract	A clinically approved receiver/interrogator design to establish a wireless link to a sensor module implanted inside the human body is presented. The module is powered by a low frequent magnetic field from the outside and data are transmitted via the inductive link. The receiver is able to detect load shift keying by the sensor module down to a modulation index of $10^{™4}.$ It includes a digitally configured automatic gain control with a dynamic range of 48 dB, using the three amplifiers integrated in the microcontroller. This enables software based gain control for optimum signal level adjustment before digitalization. Data reception is improved by using a digital matched filter with very low computational effort. Additionally, this filter suppresses the carrier frequency and all harmonics, which improves sensitivity. The circuit has been implemented using standard components and can be used in passive sensor networks for implants and similar applications.
