| Abstract | The 4th ACM/SIGOPS Workshop on Large-Scale Distributed Systems and Middleware (LADIS 2010) continued the series of popular workshops aiming to shed light on the principles underlying the design of large-scale distributed systems, such as those found in modern data centers and cloud computing infrastructures. This year's program followed the format that has been established by the prior LADIS installments, consisting of a mixture of accepted technical papers and keynote presentations. The keynote presentations were given by prominent industry speakers: Tushar Chandra (Google), Paolo Faraboschi and Norm Jouppi (HP Exascale Computing Lab), Chet Murthy (IBM Research), Burkhard Neidecker-Lutz (SAP Research), and Pablo Rodriguez Rodriguez (Telefonica Research Lab). The workshop talks and ensuing discussions revolved around scalability challenges that arise in large-scale distributed systems, and emerging solutions. Several speakers emphasized the urgent need for innovation in the area of data storage organization and management when designing for scale, and argued that the traditional approaches (such as relational database systems, strict ACID quality of service, and multi-level storage hierarchies) are no longer sufficient to satisfy the needs of the today's cloud systems. Other presentations covered a large variety of topics within the broader areas of failure tolerance, consistency models, communication and networking, massive data set processing, and scalable resource management. Overall, as in the prior years, LADIS 2010 proved to be instrumental for enhancing our knowledge and understanding of scalable system design principles, and identifying new promising directions for future work, which would drive the future installments of the workshop.
