Computational history: applying computing, simulation, and game design to explore historic events

Abstract	This research project is an experiment of multiple dimensions, based on interdisciplinary concepts from both the computer science and history disciplines: 1) to determine if an interdisciplinary historical simulation model can be constructed using a game design engine and game programming techniques and technologies. This question is investigated and answered through the actual construction. 2) Can a historical military model be created that is based on records and analysis, and then validated by comparing results generated by the model against historical outcomes? This research both creates and validates a simulation model. 3) Can a validated historical model be used to reveal new knowledge about the battle and answer questions that research has previously been unable to answer? The use of a validated computational simulation model to investigate past historic events is a novel application of computing in a new interdisciplinary research area. This paper presents a computational historic experimental simulation model, explains how the simulation has been validated against historical evidence, and then uses that simulation to investigate unanswered questions from history.
