| Abstract | The Advanced Combatman System being developed by the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) and Singapore Technologies Engineering aims to arm infantryman with sensors that allow him to exchange information with other troops, and see and shoot in the dark. An integral component of the Advanced Combatman System is the Head Mounted Display (HMD) subsystem, which conveys information, inputs from the various sensors as well as weapons sights to the soldier. The HMD, being a monocular and opaque device, will occlude an eye and give rise to binocular rivalry, visual interference and depth-of-focus problems [1]. These problems may disorientate the soldier, adversely affect his gait and situation awareness, thus reducing his performance in the battlefield. The extent to which the HMD affects the soldier's gait along with display designs which enhance the soldier's situation awareness must be explored, in order to anticipate and overcome problems arising from its use. The assessment of gait revealed that the use of the HMD reduces the user's mean walking and running velocity (p < 0.01); makes the user take smaller steps (p < 0.01); and reduces his ability to keep within a fixed path boundary (p < 0.01). It may thus be concluded that the loss of stereoscopic vision adversely affects the user's gait. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
