| Abstract | An analysis is presented of the effects of contention for the use of the Input/Output channel to secondary storage. Quantitative results are obtained by means of a discrete simulation for an IBM System/360 Model 50 computer under the operating environment of a real-time interactive management information system (United Aircraft Information Management System - UAIMS). Alternative software and Input/Output hardware device configurations that would support increased demands for service are modeled and the relative throughput capabilities and device utilizations are compared and discussed. The model, written in GPSS/360, was designed to give substantive results reasonably independent of the specific software packages involved. In this way performance aspects dependent on the basic system architecture become more readily apparent. Conclusions drawn from the statistics of the model runs are general to interactive on-line systems of the nature discussed. Results are derived in relative rather than absolute terms. A representative benchmark configuration was modeled, and the capabilities of the other configurations measured in terms of this. When two on-line transaction partitions are maintained, it is shown that the through-put capability can be improved by 16 to 42 percent by the use of two selector channels instead of one. The degree of improved capability is dependent on the device type attached and the amount of contention that exists for the seek facility. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
