Research at Altaïr

Content Provider ACM Digital Library
Editor Richard, Philippe
Abstract Altaïr is a five year project which began in September of 1986. Its goal is to design an implement a next generation database system. The five year project was divided in two phases: a three year prototyping phase and a two year phase devoted for one part to the development of a product from the prototype and for the other part to a new research effort. The three year phase ended by the demonstration of the V1 prototype of the O2 object-oriented database system which has been distributed for experimentation to more than 40 universities and about 13 industrial partners. The contribution of the Altaïr group to the database research community has been mainly in three areas: data model and database languages, object stores, and programming environments. Furthermore, all these efforts have been integrated in a consistent way into the V1 prototype. The results of this research and development effort are being summarized in a book [BDK91] which is a commented collection of papers, most of them already published in the proceedings of a number of internationally recognized conferences. We briefly survey in the following the O2 activities.

About National Digital Library of India (NDLI)
NDLI logo

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
