Description | The Adak Daily Sun was a military newspaper based at the U.S. Naval Air Facility Adak on Adak Island in the Aleutians. Its exact start date is unknown, but it likely began sometime before 1954 and ceased publication around that year. It was succeeded by the Adak Sun, a weekly newspaper that started in 1955. The Adak Daily Sun primarily covered local news and events at the military facility, including sports results, arrivals and departures of personnel, radio and television schedules, movie theater listings, and community gatherings. Over the years, it expanded its coverage to include national and international news, although it continued to focus on military-related topics. The paper played a significant role as a calendar and event bulletin for the military base and surrounding community. It chronicled the growth and development of the military base, noting the transition from temporary World War II-era structures to more permanent facilities. The Adak Sun merged with the Tundra Times in 1976 to form the Adak Eagle’s Call, which ceased publication in 1997, shortly before the closure of the Naval Air Facility Adak. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1953 of this newspaper. |
