Description | The Ketchikan Mining News, later renamed The Ketchikan Miner, was founded in 1907 by a coalition of local saloonkeepers in response to a dispute over liquor licenses. Former territorial governor Alfred Swineford served as the editor initially. Swineford eventually retired due to health reasons, and new management took over. Bert Howdeshell, known for his colorful editorials, became both manager and editor in 1909. The paper was sold to Richard Bushell, Jr., in 1911, characterized as a member of the "Tory Press" for his opposition to home rule for Alaska. Later, Jeffrey Rivard bought The Daily Miner in 1915, merging it with other papers to create The Daily Progressive Miner, while The Progressive continued as a weekly edition. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1907 of this newspaper. |
