Description | The Baranof Banner, a brief weekly publication in Sitka, Alaska, was operated by the Pioneer Press and ran from April 10 to October 2, 1958. It pledged to fairly present both sides of issues and focused on Sitka's residents, activities, and plans, foreseeing prosperous times ahead for the town. Despite initially reducing its size due to time constraints, it promised subsequent full-sized issues. Regular features included sections for women, sports, and occasionally teenagers, along with columns like "We The Pioneers" and "The Crying Towel" covering local events and sports news, respectively. The paper's coverage centered mainly on local news, including community events, arrivals and departures, and even a weekly "Stork Report." The publication was briefly suspended during the summer while seeking a linotype operator, resuming in time for the statehood vote, urging high voter turnout. Staffing decreased over time, with Richard Calhoun eventually assuming both editor and publisher roles. The paper's final issues were reduced to four pages, with the last known publication on October 2, 1958. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1958 of this newspaper. |
