Description | The Journal and the Carolina Spartan, serving Spartanburg for over 130 years, mirrored the city's growth from a cotton center to an industrial hub. Established in 1843 as the Spartanburg Spartan, it evolved into the Spartanburg Carolina Spartan in 1852. During the Civil War, it briefly halted due to paper shortages. Charles Petty's stewardship from 1878 earned him the title "dean of the newspaper profession in South Carolina." Merging with the Spartanburg Journal in 1913, it became the daily Journal and the Carolina Spartan. In 1982, it merged further to create the Spartanburg Herald-Journal, now a staple reaching 160,000 readers daily. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1917 of this newspaper. |
