Description | The Mississippi Index, established shortly after the Civil War, served Columbus, Mississippi, as a tri-weekly publication. Founded by the Worthington brothers, it evolved into the Columbus Index under James A. Stevens. Later, it became the Columbus Commercial, transitioning to a weekly then semiweekly format. Susan C. Maer took charge of the Columbus Dispatch, later succeeded by her son, Percy W. Maer. The papers consolidated into the Commercial Dispatch in 1922 under V. Birney Imes. They covered local schools, events like "Decoration Day," and national affairs, including World War I. Significant local events, such as President Taft's visit, made headlines. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1867 of this newspaper. |
