Description | The New Era, established by William H. Wood and Julia A. A. Sargent Wood in 1860, replaced the Sauk Rapids Frontierman, reflecting the town's evolving post-frontier phase. Embracing antislavery Republicanism, the paper also featured a literary department under Mrs. Wood's direction. Known as Minnie Mary Lee, Julia contributed sentimental poetry and stories to the paper, along with book reviews and editorials promoting local philanthropy and women's exercise. Meanwhile, William Wood's political coverage extended to diverse topics, including Native American affairs and German Democratic perspectives. Despite its short lifespan, The New Era left a lasting mark on Minnesota journalism, showcasing early "scribbling women" like Julia Wood. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1860 of this newspaper. |
