Description | The Weekly Jeffersonian, launched in October 1906 by Thomas E. Watson and his son John Durham Watson in Augusta, Georgia, quickly gained nationwide attention with circulation surpassing 25,000. Serving as a platform for Thomas Watson's editorials, it embraced nativist, white supremacist, and anti-Catholic ideologies, reflecting his political ambitions. Watson's support for disenfranchising African Americans and his shift towards the county unit system underscored his evolving political stance. After relocating operations to Atlanta in April 1907, and subsequently to Thomson, Georgia, the paper intensified its sensationalist tactics and extreme anti-Catholic rhetoric. Despite its peak circulation in 1915 fueled by an anti-Semitic campaign against Leo Frank, the Jeffersonian faced demise following Watson's anti-war stance, culminating in its ban by the Post Office Department in 1917. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1907 of this newspaper. |
