Description | Orion Clemens, proprietor of the Hannibal Journal in Missouri, underwent a whirlwind of changes during his three-year tenure from 1850 to 1853. Initially renaming it the Western Union, he later reverted to the original title after several shifts. Notably, he enlisted his younger brother Samuel, later known as Mark Twain, as a typesetter and editorial assistant. Together, they advocated for community initiatives like public libraries and railroad improvements. Despite their efforts, the paper faced financial challenges, prompting strict payment terms for subscribers. Despite Orion's attempt to launch a daily edition in 1853, all versions of the Hannibal Journal ceased publication later that year. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1853 of this newspaper. |
