Description | The Semi-Weekly Republican, initially the Feliciana Republican, was established in 1868 by Joseph Parkinson Newsham in St. Francisville, Louisiana. In March 1872, it underwent a name change to the Semi-Weekly Republican under new editor Don A. Weber. Advocating for African American enfranchisement and fair treatment but opposing Reconstruction, it endorsed Horace Greeley and Benjamin Gratz Brown of the Liberal Republican Party in the 1872 presidential election. The paper focused on Liberal Republican politics, criticizing Radical Republicans, including President Ulysses S. Grant. After Greeley's defeat, it became the Weekly Feliciana Republican in November 1872. Weber's involvement in electoral fraud for Rutherford B. Hayes in 1876 led to his assassination in 1877, reported by the Feliciana Sentinel. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1872 of this newspaper. |
