Description | The Gazette and Democrat of Lancaster, Ohio, emerged briefly in 1860 as a result of Dr. Hervey Scott's purchase and subsequent merger of the Gazette with another paper called the American Democrat. The new publication emphasized unity with its motto "The Union of the States—One Country—One Destiny." However, this venture was short-lived as Scott soon sold the paper back to Robert M. Clarke and John M. Sutphen, along with William H. Kooken. They reverted to the name Weekly Lancaster Gazette and continued their editorial stance against Democratic policies while supporting the Republican Party. The paper persisted through various changes in ownership and editorial direction, remaining a steadfast supporter of the Union during the Civil War. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1860 of this newspaper. |
