Description | The World of Martinsburg, West Virginia, underwent several transformations under various publishers. Initially launched by F. Vernon Aler in 1891, it later passed to James F. Thompson and Captain W.B. Colston in 1893, who aligned it with the Democratic Party. By 1895, W.E. Hoffheins took over, maintaining its Democratic stance. The paper underwent title changes, becoming the Evening World by 1896. In 1912, Hoffheins consolidated his holdings under the World Printing Co., adding the Martinsburg Statesman-Democrat. Despite the name changes, all three papers ceased publication by 1921, likely due to Hoffheins leaving during World War I to work for the federal government. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1918 of this newspaper. |
