Description | The "Knoxville Whig and Chronicle" had its roots in the journalistic career of William Rule, a Knox Countian who began as a printer's apprentice on Brownlow's Knoxville Whig. After the Civil War, Rule co-founded the "Knoxville Weekly Chronicle" and later the "Knoxville Daily Chronicle." With August J. Ricks and then Rudolph A. Brown, Rule navigated the paper through various changes, including a merger with the Knoxville Whig. Notable figures like Adolph Ochs, who later owned the New York Times, had their start at the Chronicle. After Rule's tenure, the paper underwent further transformations, ultimately merging with the Knoxville Journal under Rule's leadership until his passing in 1928. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1875 of this newspaper. |
