Description | The Winchester Journal, founded by Clint D. Smith in 1855, embodied staunch Republican ideals during the Civil War. Ownership changed hands frequently until Amos C. Beeson and Elias J. Marsh stabilized it in 1870. Renamed the Winchester Journal, it thrived under the Beeson family's leadership, expanding to over 2,000 in circulation by 1898. Amos Beeson's sons, William and Charles, played key roles in its growth. After Amos' death in 1903, the Beeson brothers continued operations until William's passing in 1920. Charles then sold the paper, leading to its merger with the Winchester Herald, forming the Winchester Journal-Herald in 1920. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1870 of this newspaper. |
