Temporal Coverage | 1800-1801 |
Description | The Gazette of the United States, a staunch Federalist publication, epitomized the intense political divisions of the late 18th century. Founded in 1789 by John Fenno, it ardently defended Federalist policies, notably under the auspices of Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton. After relocating to Philadelphia in 1791, it engaged in fierce rivalry with Republican papers like Philip Freneau’s National Gazette. Despite interruptions, it evolved through various name changes, including the Gazette of the United States, & Daily Advertiser during its 1800-1801 iteration in Philadelphia under C.P. Wayne's printing. Ultimately, it ceased publication in 1818, merging with the True American. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1800 of this newspaper. |
