Description | The Portland Gazette, founded in 1798 by Elezer Alley Jenks, underwent numerous name changes and transitions in ownership. After being known as Jenks's Portland Gazette in 1799-1802, it became Jenks' Portland Gazette. Maine Advertiser in 1802-1803 and then Jenks' Portland Gazette and Maine Advertiser in 1803. In 1805, it briefly adopted the title Portland Gazette before merging into Portland Gazette and Maine Advertiser until 1818. Owned successively by Isaac Adams and Arthur Shirley, the paper's rivalry with the Democratic Eastern Argus shaped Portland's political and literary landscape. Despite declines in the 19th century, its legacy continued through mergers, leading to the present-day Portland Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1805 of this newspaper. |
