Description | The Branding Iron, born out of a delayed title plate, quickly found its name in Atoka, Choctaw Nation, debuting on February 23, 1884. Renfrew M. Roberts, the editor, promptly dubbed it so, fitting for a publication inundated with cattle brand advertisements. As the official mouthpiece of the Choctaw Nation, its motto, "Devoted to Indian and Stock News," reflected its focus. Founded by the Roberts brothers, sons of Indian Journal's founder, the paper received funding from the Choctaw Council. However, after just four issues, under pressure from influential Choctaws, it transformed into the Indian Champion, emphasizing Choctaw affairs and printing in both English and Choctaw until its closure in 1885. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1884 of this newspaper. |
