Description | "The Pilot," later known as the "Pilot and Transcript," was a Baltimore Whig newspaper published from April 2, 1840, to January 25, 1841, advocating for William Henry Harrison and John Tyler in the 1840 presidential election. Owned and edited by Gen. Duff Green, it featured political content, news, editorials, letters, and more. Green, once a Jacksonian, became a Whig supporter in 1831. A religious controversy led to the paper's demise, with Maryland Whigs withdrawing their support over Green's anti-Catholic stance. Despite his pro-Southern views, Green opposed secession. He died in 1875. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1840 of this newspaper. |
