Description | The Evansville Weekly Journal traces its roots to the Evansville Daily Journal, established in 1834 by William Town. It transitioned to a daily in 1848 under William Chandler. Addison H. Sanders acquired it in 1848, focusing on city department improvements. Francis Y. Carlile took over in 1856, forming the Evansville Journal Company in 1858. James H. McNeely bought Carlile's interests in 1859. The paper grew under Thayer and the McNeely brothers, advocating for the Union during the Civil War. The McNeelys managed it until 1923, when it was sold to the Evansville Courier Company and merged into the Sunday Courier and Journal. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1848 of this newspaper. |
