Description | The Arkansas Banner, established in 1843 by Archibald Yell, served as the Democratic voice in Little Rock, countering the Whig-leaning Arkansas State Gazette. Dr. Solon Borland and Elbert Hartwell English were early editors, with Borland famously dueling and befriending his Gazette counterpart. After Borland's departure for the Mexican-American War, Archibald Hamilton Rutherford helmed the Banner, succeeded by Lambert Jeffrey Reardon and Lambert A. Whitely. Whitely transformed it into the Arkansas Democratic Banner, later selling it, leading to the creation of The True Democrat. The paper's evolution mirrored the political landscape of Little Rock in the mid-19th century. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1851 of this newspaper. |
