Description | The National Whig, founded in 1847 by Charles W. Fenton, quickly established itself as a vocal supporter of Zachary Taylor for President and a critic of the administration's policies. Despite its initial enthusiasm, the paper faced internal strife, leading to a temporary suspension of publication in 1848. Upon its return, it continued its advocacy for Taylor until its sudden closure in 1849, surprising many in the newspaper industry. Charles W. Fenton, after the paper's demise, transitioned away from printing, taking on diplomatic and governmental roles. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1847 of this newspaper. |
