Description | The Great West was a Farmers’ Alliance and later Populist Party newspaper, founded in St. Paul, Minnesota, in October 1889. Dr. Everett W. Fish served as its editor and publisher, responding to Ignatius Donnelly's call for a paper aligned with Alliance principles. Donnelly, a prominent reformer, sought to counter mainstream papers' neglect or hostility towards Alliance ideas. However, tensions arose between Donnelly and Fish due to the latter's confrontational style and perceived Republican leanings. Fish's preoccupation with alleged conspiracies further alienated him from the Populist mainstream. The split led Fish to relocate the paper to Aberdeen, South Dakota, in January 1894, before later moving it to Redfield. The Great West ceased publication around 1896, marking the end of Fish's association with the Populist movement. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1894 of this newspaper. |
