Description | The Canton Dakota Farmers’ Leader, launched in August 1890, catered to South Dakota’s agricultural community, particularly associated with the Farmers Alliance movement. Originally named the Canton / Dakota Farmers’ Advocate earlier that year, it published as an eight-page, six-column weekly. Two short-lived daily editions also emerged: the Canton Daily Dakota Farmers’ Leader in September 1890 for the Lincoln County Fair, and the Canton Daily Leader in October and November 1896, urging support for Democratic candidate William Jennings Bryan. Covering local and national news, agricultural issues, ads, and fiction, it was a staple for farmers. Founded by progressive farmers, it was later helmed by Arthur Linn, fostering cooperative ideals until 1915. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1890 of this newspaper. |
