Description | The Soldier's Letter was a short-lived English-language periodical produced in Manila by the First California Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish–American War of 1898. Only two issues were printed (in November and December 1898), serving as a makeshift “First American paper” in the city. Packed with battle reports, maps, local sports coverage, humorous stories, and advertisements, the publication offered soldiers and locals a window into both the conflict and daily life under American military rule. It stands today as a rare collector's item and a vivid relic of wartime journalism in the Philippines. Southeast Asian Newspapers |
